December 2009 Newsletter
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving full of good food and wonderful and
memorable times with your family and friends.
Now that Thanksgiving has passed and we are all shopping for those wonderful
Christmas gifts. Some of these gifts will be for adults and some for children.
Now is the perfect time to prepare a scrapbook as a gift. If you spend a little
time each day working on it, you’ll have the best gift and one that they will
love for years to come.
Scrapping on a Budget/Stretching your Supplies
by Amy Wheeler
Today, it seems that everyone is
trying to stretch their dollar either because of the current economy
or simply because the holidays are approaching. With scrapbooking, I
LOVE when I can find products that really give me more bang for
my buck. I was able to do just that this month with a few products
from Scrappin’ {Sports} Stuff and some miscellaneous items I had on
hand. Not only was I able to finish two 12x12 layouts, but I was also
able to cross a gift off my Christmas list, too!
Here is a list of the items I
added to my cart at Scrappin’ {Sports} Stuff:
I also added these items from my
stash:
-
1 - 12x12 cardstock (I used
kraft)
-
Scrap of cardstock (cut
8-1/2”x10-1/2”)
-
5 – Buttons (although brads
could be substituted)
-
2 – eyelets
-
Scrapper’s floss (I used two
different colors)
-
Alphabet of your choice
-
Pop dots
-
Gaffer tape
For my first project, I made the
12x12 “Happy Camper” layout.

Here are my step-by-step directions:
- I selected the Bella Blvd – Camped Out –
Go Fish! 12x12 paper to use for my base.
- I cut the “Gone Fishing” journaling card out
of the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a Bella 12x12 paper.
- Next, I arranged my three photos and “Gone
Fishing” journaling card together. They measured 8” x 10”, so I cut my
scrap of cardstock to 8-1/2” x 10-1/2”. (Whatever your photos measure
to, cut an additional ˝”.)
- I adhered the photos and journaling card to
the cardstock.
- ***Before adhering my oversized photo mat to
the base patterned paper, I measured the space that would be covered
by the mat. Based on my measurements, I cut out the center of the
Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Go Fish! 12x12 paper to set aside for
use on another project. (For my project, I left a top and bottom
border of 1-1/2”, a 2” border on the left and a 3” border on the
right.)
- After removing the center of the base paper,
I adhered my oversized photo mat to the page.
- I cut the blue/yellow/white striped strip
from the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a Bella 12x12 paper and
adhered it to my page to the left of my oversized photo mat.
- Next, using a circle punch, I punched the
“Happy Camper” circle out of the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a
Bella 12x12 paper and adhered it to the right side of my oversized
photo mat using pop dots. This is my title for the page. (This circle
could be hand cut from the paper if you do not have a circle punch.)
- I also cut a fish from the Bella Blvd –
Camped Out – Bits a Bella 12x12 paper and adhered it to the top
right of my title circle again using pop dots.
- To complete my page, I cut one more accent
(the “I got one!” block) from the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a
Bella 12x12 paper and journaled in my journaling block.
My second project is a Christmas
gift for my mother-in-law. I fell in love with the Tattered Angels
– Outdoor Bingo Boards and had an idea for them as soon as I saw
them. I wanted to include photos of everyone in my husband’s family
for this gift. Unfortunately, with one brother living out of state, I
didn’t have a current photo of everyone together, plus I wanted to
include individual shots of all five grandchildren. To accommodate
that many photos on such a small project, I made a couple 4x6 photo
collages and cut the photos out either individually or in strips. I
opted to use both color and b/w shots.

To complete this “family”
frame project, I followed these step-by-step directions:
-
Using the Tattered Angels –
Outdoor Bingo Cards, place the bingo cards in order to read
“Explore Outdoor Life” and tape them together on the backside using
gaffer tape. (This project could also be completed by punching holes
in the cards and either holding them together with book rings or
ribbon.)
-
I matted my two color prints
with Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Go Fish! 12x12 paper (cut from
the center I removed from the “Happy Camper” layout).
-
Next, I positioned my photos
in a way that was appealing to me. I purposely have them overlapping
different cards to give it a unified look.
-
I cut the “frog” and “leaves”
12” strips out of the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a Bella
12x12 paper and positioned them overlapping at the ends of my
photo strips.
-
Cut the “good times” block out
of the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a Bella 12x12 paper and
adhere it to the top right corner of the project.
-
Tie floss through four buttons
and add them over the frog strips and at the end of the “good times”
strip.
-
Cut the journaling block with
brackets out of the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a Bella 12x12
paper and position it on the leaves strip in the center bingo
card with title on it.
-
Hand cut the large tree from
the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a Bella 12x12 paper and
adhere it to the bottom right corner of the project with pop dots.
-
Take the “Who Are You?”
calling card from the Tattered Angels – Outdoor Bingo Cards
set and add an eyelet to the upper right hand corner.
-
Add an eyelet to the upper
left hand corner of the “Explore” card of your project.
-
Using floss, attach the
calling card to the bingo card.
For my final project, I used up
as many scraps from the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Go Fish! 12x12
paper and Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a Bella 12x12 paper
as possible. After matting my two color photos for the Bingo Card
Frame Project, I used the three scraps of Bella Blvd – Camped Out –
Go Fish! 12x12 paper without cropping them and simply cut pieces
from the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a Bella 12x12 paper and
positioned them around to form a grid layout. For a few finishing
touches, I hand drew a border around the edge of layout; hand cut a
cloud and fish from the Bella Blvd – Camped Out – Bits a Bella
12x12 paper; added a calling card from the Tattered Angels –
Outdoor Bingo Cards set and a “frog” strip scrap from the Bingo
Card Frame project finished off with a button; and raised the cut out
fish with pop dots and added some hand-stitching with floss to mimic a
fishing line. I used the same alphabet for part of the title on this
page as I did for the Bingo Card Frame project. The other half of my
title was a word strip cut out from the paper.
