April 2010
Newsletter
Spring is in the air. The weather is starting to turn nice and the flowers are
starting to bloom. Spring time brings sports like track, indoor football games,
and other activities. Creating scrapbooks during this time of year are perfect.
You can put them together to give as graduation gifts. The kids will love them
and you’ll enjoy making them for any occasion.
Pinewood Derby Frame
by Jolene Johnston
This year my son and husband took on the cub scout
Pinewood Derby with renewed excitement and determination. Their goal
was to improve their performance even though they faced challenges
with new kit wheels and differences of opinion about wheel
treatments. This year the boys came home with a 1st place trophy for
Bear Cubs and the Grand Champion trophy for the entire pack. During
my son's final race a wheel fell off his car which caused near panic
from just about everyone watching. Luckily our pack drops the lowest
timed race, so without that race his little speedster was still fast
enough to clinch the title.

I made this frame for my husband's desk at work so he
can remember all the hard work they did together and the fun they
shared with racing. The lasercut title was easy to use on this
project - simply snip the title words apart and adhere to the frame
with Mod Podge. Remember to utilitze doublesided papers (like this
racing paper) on projects as they coordinate perfectly and save your
scrappy budget. Altering a frame is a great way to display photos
from a special event that makes everyone proud!
1. Paint edges of frame black and allow to
dry.
2. Adhere Defining Racing Paper (words) to frame using Mod Podge.
3. Trim 3" wide strip of Defining Racing Paper (flag) to left side
of frame with Mod Podge. Ink all edges of frame.
4. Trim Pinewood Derby Title to separate words and flag. Adhere
words on frame as shown.
5. Apply strip of ribbon where patterned paper edges meet.
6. Cover entire frame with sealant coat of Mod Podge.
7. Adhere Race Metal Accents race car and metal gears with glue
dots.

Beyond the Sketch
by Carolyn Lontin
Sketches are a great way to get your creativity moving, but
sometimes we can get stuck on a sketch. This article is going to
talk about ways to look beyond the sketch and make the sketch work
for you, your style or the particular photos you want to scrap.
I
used a great
PageMaps sketch:

I
loosely followed the sketch, by using some of the key elements such
as the three photos and the embellishments on the torn right edge.
Directions:
-
Start with three photos, 2.5”x5”, sand the edges
with a file
-
Use black Bazzill as your base
-
Trim LYB - Generation Z - Black Metallic Zig Zag
Paper to 11.25”x11.25”
-
Distress the edges with Making Memories Edge
Scraper Tool, then attach to layout
-
Trim LYB - Generation Z - Orange Metallic Wallpaper
Paper to 10”x10”, tear off a small strip along the right side.
-
Distress the edges with Making Memories Edge
Scraper Tool, then attach to layout
-
Add photos to layout
-
Add LYB - Generation Z - Beyond Extreme Vinyl
Sticker to layout
-
Add ‘Xtreme’ shape from LYB - Generation Z - Clear
Cut Shapes, I held mine in place with two colored staples.
-
Add the gears from LYB - Generation Z - Dimensional
Stickers
-
Mix in Creative Impressions - Mini Brads - Black
with the dimensional gear stickers
-
Cut journaling strips from black Bazzill cardstock,
write journaling on strips & attach to layout
-
Add date with Making Memories Magnetic Date Stamp
For my second take on the same sketch, I flipped the sketch and
instead of using three small photos, I used one larger photo and a
border punch instead of tearing the edge, but I still created a
decorative border from brads:
Directions:
-
Start with one photo 4”x8.75”, sand the edges with
file
-
Use Reminisce - Let's Hike Paper as your background
-
Trim Karen Foster - Red Notebook Paper to 7.75”x11”
(I had already used the part with the words on another layout, but
you will want to trim off the words)
-
On this layout, instead of tearing the edge of the
paper I used a border punch along the bottom.
-
Distress the edges with Making Memories Edge
Scraper Tool, then attach to layout
-
Trim Teresa Collins - Sports Edition - Zach's
Sports Numbers Paper to 2”x11”
-
Distress the edges with Making Memories Edge
Scraper Tool, then attach to layout
-
Using a sewing machine, stitch along all of the
edges except the bottom edge with the border punch.
-
Trim Bella Blvd - Camped Out - Happy Campers Paper
to 3.5”x9”
-
Distress the edges with Making Memories Edge
Scraper Tool, then attach to layout
-
Add photo to layout
-
Use “I love hiking” sticker from Stamping Station -
Hiking Sticker Sheet, attach to layout
-
Using Bella Blvd - Camped Out - Bits a Bella Paper,
trim out the strip of flowers, a journaling block, ‘nature at its
best’ strip and ‘hiking’
-
Trim the strip of flowers to 5.25” long, Distress
the edges with Making Memories Edge Scraper Tool, then attach to
layout
-
Add journaling to journaling block, then attach to
layout.
-
Using Bella Blvd - Camped Out - Label Additions
Cardstock Stickers:
-
add a pop dot behind the oval tree sticker then
attach to layout
-
tuck the ‘memories’ sticker under the photo and add
a pop dot to the circle bird sticker and attach to layout
-
Using your ‘nature at its best’ and ‘hiking’
strips, distress the edges with Making Memories Edge Scraper Tool,
then attach to layout
-
Tuck in pin with flag
-
Add decorative bird and dragonfly brads, then mix
in yellow brads from Creative Impressions - Mini Brads - Primary
Finally for my third take on the same sketch, I flipped the sketch
around to create a two-page layout. I joined the two-page layout by
adding a photo to make the photos span across both pages as well as
having the large title span across both pages to create a uniform
layout. I still used a torn edge and the decorative border from the
original sketch, I just moved the border across the top.
Directions:
-
I printed my photos all 3” tall but trimmed them
down so they would fit and sanded the edges with a file, my layout
uses the following sizes of photos (left to right): 3”x3.25”,
3”x3.75”, 3”x2.5”, 3”x3.25”, 3”x2.75”, 3”x3.5”3”x2.5” yours may
vary depending on where you can trim your photos.
-
Use black Bazzill as your base
-
Trim two pieces of Scrappin' Sports - Baseball
Reflections Paper to about 4.75”x10.5”, tear off a small strip
along the right side on one and on the left side of the other
-
Distress the edges with Making Memories Edge
Scraper Tool, then attach to layout
-
Trim two pieces of Scrappin' Sports - Dotted
Baseball Paper to about 3”x10.5”, tear off a small strip along
the right side on one and on the left side of the other
-
Distress the edges with Making Memories Edge
Scraper Tool, then attach to layout
-
Trim two pieces of Scrappin' Sports - Baseball on
Fire Paper to 1.5”x12”, here I decided to not tear the edge and
let this strip run all the way across two pages
-
Distress the edges with Making Memories Edge
Scraper Tool, then attach to layout
-
Add photos to layout
-
Die cut letters to create a large title, I thought
it would be fun to use patterned paper for part of my title
-
Use white Bazzill cardstock for "let's"
-
Use Scrappin'
Sports - Name of the Game Baseballs Paper for "play ball"
-
Create a fun cluster using Queen & Co - Baseball
Felt Frenzy, I added a pop dot under the baseball for some
dimension
-
Using Eyelet Outlet - Baseball Brads and Eyelet
Outlet - Baseball Bat Brads and mixing in some red brads from
Creative Impressions - Mini Brads - Primary I created a fun
border, using the stars in the sketch as inspiration
-
Cut journaling strips from black Bazzill cardstock,
write journaling on strips & attach to layout
-
Add date
Here were three layouts created using inspiration from the same
sketch, all very different with photos, supplies and themes, but
with some similar elements such as the borders (the sketch used
stars) and the torn/punched edge! I hope this inspires you to look
beyond the sketch to create your own fantastic layouts!
